As the Bristol Township School District continues to develop its early dismissal program, Superintendent Steve Chiaro emphasized the importance of preparing students for their future endeavors. 'Whether it's graduation or being ready for college or a career,' he noted that the district is committed to providing students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed.

The science of reading has been gaining attention in recent years as educators recognize its impact on student outcomes. Chris Woolard, interim superintendent of public instruction at the Ohio Department of Education, emphasized the sense of urgency surrounding this issue. 'Children only have one chance to grow up once,' he said. 'We need to have a sense of urgency.'

Ohio data shows that students who are not proficient readers are less likely to meet key markers of success. Woolard cited statistics highlighting the vital nature of reading in children's development, emphasizing the importance of providing explicit and systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing.

The science of reading informs students on how to read and write proficiently, explaining why some students struggle with these skills. According to the Ohio Department of Education website, this approach does not rely on models of teaching that focus on meaning, structure, syntax, or visual cues, including the three-cueing approach.

Governor DeWine has also emphasized the importance of implementing the science of reading in schools. Warren City Schools have already begun incorporating elements of this approach into their curriculum. The Bristol Township School District aims to follow suit, prioritizing the science of reading as part of its early dismissal program.
